Marsh Leads Wrestling Team at Williams Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior John Marsh (New Bedford, MA) captured the 149-pound title at the Williams College Invitational on Tuesday to lead the Bears to a fourth place finish at the tournament.   

Bridgewater tallied 72.5 points finishing behind tournament champion Williams (144.5 pts), University of Southern Maine (83.0) and Roger Williams University (75.5).  

Seeded first in the 149-pound weight bracket, Marsh posted a win by fall in his first bout of the day and then knocked off number eight seed Peter Gilman of Southern Maine, 8-6.  Marsh pinned fifth seeded Nick Herrick of Roger Williams in the semifinals and followed that up with a 3-2 victory over number two Corey Paulish of Williams in the title match.  

Marsh, who is ranked fourth in Division III at 149, currently sports an overall record of 17-1 with five pins.  He was tied for first in the most recent New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) individual rankings along with Kevin Sutherland of Rhode Island College.  

This was the third tournament championship for Marsh this season as he also placed first at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational and the Springfield College Doug Parker Invitational.

Senior Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) also had a solid performance at the tournament as he finished in second place in the 157-pound weight class.  Cammisa, the two seed, won 14-0 and 8-3 before bowing to top seeded Carl Breitenstein of Williams, 7-4, in the championship bout.  Cammisa was fifth in the NEWA individual rankings while Breitenstein was number one.   

Junior Zachary Bates (Leyden, MA) also finished in second place as he lost in the title match competing out of the 174-pound weight class.  Ranked second in New England as well as at the tournament, he posted a win by fall in his first bout of the day.  After an easy 22-8 major decision, Bates knocked off number three seed Chris Nadeau of Roger Williams, 8-3.  In the championship match, Bates dropped a 9-3 decision to Jason Pagan of Division II AIC.  

Junior Ethan Raymond (Middlebury, VT) rounded out the top performances for the Bears at the tournament.  Raymond was the six seed in the 165-pound bracket.  After a quick win by fall, he upset number three seeded Jon Foster of Williams, 12-1.  Raymond then dropped a 5-2 decision to number two Kyle Rodgers of Roger Williams in the semifinals.  In the consolation round, he posted a 10-1 victory before losing in the third place match, 7-3, to seventh seeded Martin Thompson of AIC.
