John Marsh Named NEWA Wrestler of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior John  Marsh has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week.

A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Marsh captured the 149-pound championship at the Springfield College Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday as he led the Bears to an 11th place finish at the event.

Marsh, who was named as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler, posted a record of 5-0 at the invitational with a win by fall (3:53) in the championship match versus Eliah Golding of Brockport State.  He also knocked off Corey Paulish of Williams College, 11-5, in the semifinals to advance to the title bout.

In nine bouts this season, Marsh has a record of 8-1 with 24 takedowns, seven near falls and five escapes.  He leads the Bears in wins, winning percentage (.889) and takedowns, and is second in near falls and tied for fifth in escapes.

During his sophomore season of 2006-2007, Marsh set the Bears' singles-season records for wins with 47 and for takedowns with 137.  He earned NEWA All-New New England honors in the 141-pound weight class and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
