NORTHFIELD, VT -- The Bridgewater State College wrestling team dropped three matches at Norwich University on Saturday. The Bears dropped a 35-13 decision to Williams College, bowed to Plymouth State University, 30-22, and wrapped up the meet with a 31-15 loss to host Norwich.
BSC was participating in the final collegiate wrestling event at Norwich. Norwich has announced it is discontinuing the sport at the conclusion of the season. The Bears fall to 2-8 in dual meet action this season.
Freshman 133-pounder Ken Francis (New Bedford, MA) and sophomore 174-pounder Zachary Bates (Leyden, MA) each went 3-0 for the Bears. Francis posted a 13-5 major decision victory over Mike Penza of Williams, and notched a pair of decision victories over Tom Paolera of Plymouth State and Josh Bolduc of Norwich. Bates recorded a 15-4 major decision win against Plymouth's Dan Curley and also had two wins by decision over Andrew Gatewood of Williams and Jake Ferguson of Norwich.
Also highlighting the meet was freshman 184-pounder DJ Siewierski (Stow, MA) who went 2-1 in the three matches. Siewierski pinned (1:41) Mike Mara of Williams and earned a 9-4 decision over Jordan Ferguson of Norwich.
BSC returns to the mat on Wednesday evening as the Bears travel to MIT for a tri-match with Roger Williams University and the host Engineers.
