Cammisa, Francis Lead Bears to 8th Place Finish at NEWA Duals

BRISTOL, R.I. - Junior Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) and freshman Ken Francis (New Bedford, MA) paced the Bridgewater State College wrestling team to an eighth place finish at the 2009 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament held at Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon. The Bears won their opening bout of the tournament but then dropped the last three to finish with a 1-3 record.

Cammisa and Francis both were a perfect 4-0 at the tournament in their respective weight classes.  Cammisa, the top-ranked New England wrestler in the 149-pound weight class, notched two pins on the day and a pair of decision victories.  Francis, competing at 133 pounds, posted one pin, a major decision victory, a win by decision and a tech. fall.

With his four victories, Cammisa improves his win-loss record to an impressive 16-1 on the season.

BSC opened the tournament with a 30-18 win over Plymouth State University to advance to the quarterfinals, but then dropped a 32-19 decision to eventual champion Johnson & Wales University.  After bowing to Wesleyan University, 31-12, the Bears ended the tournament with a 28-17 loss to host Roger Williams in the seventh place match.

Sophomore heavyweight Sean Griffin (Leominster, MA) also wrestled well for the Bears as he competed in three matches going 2-1 with a pair of pins.

Johnson and Wales captured the tournament title for the second straight season, the third time in the last four years and fourth time overall. The Wildcats held off Rhode Island College, 18-17, in the championship match.

The Bears will head to Norwich University on Saturday, January 24th.  BSC will have four matches against MIT, Plymouth State, Williams College and host Norwich.
