BSC Bears Sweep Pilgrim Wrestling League Tri-Match

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State College Bears, behind record-setting performances by senior John Fralick (Woburn, MA), sophomore John Marsh (New Bedford, MA), and freshman Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT), swept a Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) tri-match versus MIT and Roger Williams this evening at the John J. Kelly Gymnasium in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater (16-6, 4-1 PWL) knocked off MIT for the second time in less than a week as the Bears came away with a 32-11 win. BSC completed the sweep with an exciting 22-15 victory over Roger Williams University, who came into the match ranked 19th in the country in the latest Brute/Adidas Division III poll. In the opening match of the evening, RWU defeated MIT by a score of 33-18.

Fralick, ranked second in New England in the 174-pound weight class, registered a win by fall against MIT, and then earned an 8-3 decision over fourth ranked James Woods of Roger Williams. Marsh, ranked fifth in New England in the 141-pound weight class, also posted a win by fall against MIT as well as a 6-0 decision versus RWU. With his two victories, Fralick became the Bears’ all-time wins leader as he now has 111 for his career. He moved past Craig Buckley who tallied 109 wins from 2001 to 2004. Marsh broke Buckley’s single-season record for wins as he raised his record to 43-7. Buckley posted 41 wins during the 2001-2002 season.

In the marquee match of the evening against Roger Williams, BSC jumped out to a 4-0 lead as sophomore Eric Rosado (Foxboro, MA) tallied a 14-5 major decision win at 125. After the Bears fell behind 6-4, Marsh put BSC back in frontwith his 6-0 decision at 141. Cammisa, ranked first in New England in the 149-pound weight class, pushed the lead up to 10-6 with a 5-0 win. The victory was his 27th of the season, as he set the school mark for wins in a season by afreshman.

Roger Williams took the next two bouts at 157 and 165 to jump back in front, 12-10. Fralick responded with the win at 174, and junior 184-pounder James Quinlan (Methuen, MA) posted his school-record 18th pin of the season, knocking off fourth ranked Dan Woods, to put the Bears back on top, 19-12. RWU cut the deficit to 19-15 with a win at 197, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get. Junior Tim Ferreira (Danbury, CT) put the finishing touches on the match as he scored a 5-2 win by decision in the battle of the heavyweights.

In the MIT match, Bridgewater won six of the nine matches (133 was a no contest) as the Bears breezed to the 32-11 victory. Rosado got things going with a 20-5, technical fall win in the 125 bout, followed by Marsh’s pin at 141 as the Bears jumped ahead 11-0. Abe Rosenfeld got the Engineers on the board with a 7-0 decision, but back-to-back forfeit wins at 157 and 165 put the match out of reach. Fralick’s pin and a Quinlan 8-4 decision at 184 increased the Bears’ lead to 32-3. MIT got wins from 197-pounder Joe Silverman and heavyweight Glenn Gleesman in the final two bouts of the match to round out the scoring

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, February 6th at home against Division II American International College. It will be BSC’s final home match of the season as Fralick and fellow senior Tom Hennessey (Raynham, MA) will be honored prior to the match.
