Meredith Sylvia Named MASCAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore midfielder Meredith Sylvia has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

A native of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Sylvia forced five turnovers and added six ground balls and four draw controls in a 1-1 week for the Bears. She also also scored four goals.

Sylvia registered four caused turnovers, three ground balls and three draw controls to go along with a pair of goals in an 11-10 setback to Southern Maine. She added three ground balls, a draw control, a caused turnover and two goals in a 16-12 win over Emmanuel.

Through nine games this season, Sylvia has 14 goals, a pair of assists, 12 ground balls, 26 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers to her credit. She is currently tied for sixth among the MASCAC leaders in draw controls and tied for seventh in caused turnovers.

In 26 games over her first two seasons with the Bears, Sylvia has amassed 35 goals, three assists, 41 ground balls, 40 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers.

The MASCAC Defensive Players of the Week honors marks the first of Sylvia's career. She garnered MASCAC Rookie of the Week accolades three times in 2023.

The BSU women's lacrosse team is presently 3-6 on the season. The Bears open MASCAC play tomorrow night when they travel to Buzzards Bay for a seven o'clock game with the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
