Women's Lacrosse Falls to Westfield, 18-12

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Westfield State University women's lacrosse team posted an 18-12 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The defending MASCAC champion Owls improve to 7-4 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC while the Bears fall to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Westfield has won six of the last seven meetings of the two teams while Bridgewater holds a 17-10 lead in the all-time series.

Megan Bailey (Quincy, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals, dished out an assist and corralled a game-best nine draw controls to lead the way for the hosts. The Owls also received three goals apiece from Lindsey Bohenko (Lowell, Mass.) and Mercedes Rozzi (South Burlington, Vt.).

Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with four goals and an assist to go along with six draw controls. Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Meredith Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass.) checked in with two goals apiece for the Bears while Ashley Silva (Rowley, Mass.) notch a goal and a pair of helpers.

With the game tied at 5-5 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Westfield used a 10-2 run to pull ahead 15-7 with 3:15 left play in the third period. Six different Owls scored during the decisive run including four goals by Bailey. Bridgewater would get no closer than six goals the rest of the way.

Westfield held a 37-28 shot advantage for the game as well as a 23-11 edge in draw controls. Ground balls were 22-18 in favor of the visitors.

Owl netminder Sydney Smith (Dalton, Mass.) made eight saves to earn her sixth win of the season. Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) turned aside 12 shots in the setback for Bridgewater State.

The Bears are off until next Saturday afternoon when they host MASCAC foe Fitchburg State University at one o'clock. The Owls entertain Springfield College on Wednesday night at seven.
