Women's Lacrosse Opens MASCAC Play with 18-15 Win over Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY,  Mass. – Seven different Bears scored and ten recorded at least one point as the visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team posted an 18-15 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The Bears improve to 4-6 (1-0 MASCAC) on the season while the Buccaneers falls to 3-6 (0-2 MASCAC). Bridgewater State is 12-0 all-time versus Maritime as the two teams first met back in 2012.

Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) registered a game-high nine points on three goals and a career-high six assists to lead the way for the visitors while Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored five goals, and Meredith Sylvia (South Dartmouth, Mass.) and Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) chipped in with three goals apiece. Herrington's third goal marked her 100th career point (85G, 15A).

Maritime's Cassie Llewellyn (Fairfield, Conn.) led all players with seven goals and ten draw controls. Llewellyn also added an assist and recorded a game-best four caused turnovers. Allie Dickinson (Kingston, Mass.) checked in with four goals and a helper for the Bucs.

Bridgewater clung to a 6-5 lead after the first quarter but dominated play in the second period, outscoring the Buccaneers 6-1 in the session to take a 12- 6 advantage into the break.

Five different Bears scored in the decisive second period led by a pair of markers from Katy Shaw (Centerville, Mass.). Kaylei Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) capped of the scoring in the quarter with her first collegiate goal.

Goals by Gonsalves, McIntyre and Sylvia helped give the Bears their biggest lead of the game (15-7) midway through the third quarter.

The Buccaneers responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 16-12 with 9:47 left to play in the final period. Llewellyn had a hand in four of the five tallies with three goals and a helper.

Strikes by McIntyre and Herrington sandwiched around a Llewellyn marker put the visitors up 18-13 with 6:49 showing on the scoreboard. Ashley Silva (Rowley,  Mass.) assisted on the Bears' lone two goals of the fourth quarter.

Player advantage goals from Lindsy Durgin (Rochester, Mass.) and Dickinson accounted for the final score of 18-15. Dickinson's tally came with just 1:21 remaining. The two teams combined for four turnovers in the final minute.

Maritime held a 36-31 shot advantage for the game as well as a slight 19-18 edge in draw controls. Ground balls were in favor of the Bears, 27-22.

Bridgewater went 15-for-23 on the clear and converted 4 of 9 free position attempts.

The Bucs were successful on 13 of 18 clear attempts and went just 4-for-10 on the free position.

Brooke La Torra (Oak Park, Calif.) made ten saves to pick up her first win in her first start of the season. Madison Selby (Baltimore, Md.) turned aside nine shots in the setback.

The MASCAC schedule continues later this week. The Bears entertain Worcester State University on Saturday at noon while the Bucs host Westfield State University on Friday night at seven.
