Women's Lacrosse Falls to #20 MIT, 20-3

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The nationally ranked MIT women's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back as the visiting Engineers cruised to a 20-3 victory over Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at four o'clock from Mazzaferro Field.

The Engineers, who were ranked 20th in the most recent IWLCA Division III Poll, improve to 4-1 on the season. The Bears fall to 2-5 with their third straight setback. MIT now holds a 7-3 lead in the all-time series.

Nine different players found the back of the net for the Engineers who led 7-2 after the first quarter and 13-2 at the intermission.

Sydney Pion (Garnet Valley, Pa.), Gwen Flusche (Ridgewood, N.H.) and Ashley Thomas (Summit, N.J.) tallied five points apiece to lead the way for MIT. Pion scored four goals and added an assist while Flusche potted a hat trick to go along with a pair of helpers. Thomas notched a goal and a game-high four assists.

The Engineers also received four goals from Julianne Flusche (Ridgewood, N.H.) and three goals from Jillian Butler (Brecksville, Ohio). Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) checked in with a goal and three assists.

Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored each of the Bears' three goals. Erin McIntyre (Tewksbury, Mass.) assisted on Herrington's first goal while Camryn Gonsalves (East Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied the assist on the second marker. The final strike came off the free position.

Three different MIT keepers combined to make seven saves with Molly Dulde (Delafield, Wisc.) getting the start and earning the win.

Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) turned aside nine shots in 45 minutes of action between the pipes for the Bears.

The Engineers held a decided 40-15 shot advantage for the game as well as a 20-10 edge in ground balls. MIT converted 16 of 17 (94.1%) clear attempt while Bridgewater went 7-for-10 (70%) on the clear. The Bears finished with a slight 14-13 differential in draw controls.

Both teams are back in action next Wednesday evening at six o'clock. The Bears entertain Emmanuel College while the Engineer host nationally ranked Amherst College.
