Women's Lacrosse Downs Colby-Sawyer, 10-6

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) scored four goals and sophomore midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) added three to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 10-6 non-conference victory over visiting Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday night at Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater improves to 2-3 with the win, while Colby-Sawyer slips to 1-4.

The Bears used a solid defensive effort to limit the Chargers to just six goals on 11 shots.  Sophomore netminder Victoria Moore (Duxbury, Mass.) made three saves to post her second straight win.

After spotting the visitors a 3-0 lead with 19-14 remaining in the first half, Bridgewater scored the final four goals of the opening stanza to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission.  Clancy potted two goals during the run, while Appleman added one.

After junior midfielder Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) notched her second goal of the night to open the second half for the visitors, Appleman and senior midfielder Stephanie Lannon (Swampscott, Mass.) tallied back-to-back markers to give BSU a 6-4 lead as the clock ticked under 20 minutes.

Senior attack Molly Pruden (Andover, Mass.) pulled the Chargers to within one at the 13:46 mark, but a pair of goals by Appleman and one by Clancy over the next five minutes gave Bridgewater its biggest lead of the night at 9-5.  A Kate Rial (Chester Springs, Pa.) goal was answered by Sammi Salverio's (Hanson, Mass.) second tally of the evening to account for the final score of 10-6.

Bridgewater held a 20-11 edge in shots and draw controls were even at nine apiece.  The Bears converted 3 of 8 free position shots while the Chargers missed on their only attempt of the game.

Along with her three goals, Clancy added a pair of draw controls and a ground ball.  Lannon finished with a goal, two caused turnovers, a draw and a ground ball, while sophomore defender Braylan Wenzel (Buzzards Bay, Mass.)  corralled a team-best four draws.

Sophomore goaltender Adrienne Bender (Wakefield, R.I.) turned aside three shots in the loss for Colby-Sawyer.  Junior midfielder Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) led the way for the Chargers with a goal, two assists, five ground balls, four draws and a caused turnover.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater travels to Roger Williams University on Monday, March 26th to take on the Hawks.  Colby-Sawyer hosts Daniel Webster College next Friday afternoon at four.
