Women's Lacrosse Downs Elms, 22-2, on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - - The Bridgewater State University Bears posted a 22-2 victory over Elms College in New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action on "Senior Day" at rainy Swenson Field.

With the win, the Bears (14-1, 6-0 NEWLA) clinch at least a share of the NEWLA regular season title as well as the top seed in the conference tournament.  Bridgewater has won outright or shared the NEWLA regular season crown every year since rejoining the Alliance in 2008.

Bridgewater had ten different goal scorers in the game and 13 players produced at least one point as the Bears finished with 22 assists in the game.  Senior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) led the way with two goals and seven assists for a game-high nine points.  Classmate Patricia Maloney (Walpole, Mass.) added six goals and two assists, while fellow senior Courtney Lennon (Medfield, Mass.) notched a pair of goals and four helpers.

Senior defender Erin Quimby (Chelmsford, Mass.) tallied her first two markers of the season and dished out three assists, while  freshman defender Braylan Wenzel (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal.

Senior netminder Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) recorded her 14th win of the season between the pipes as she did not face a shot in 30 minutes of action.  Weber needs one more victory to equal Meghan Griffins single-season program mark of 15 wins set in 2010.

Bridgewater held a 42-4 shot advantage for the game as well as a 25-1 edge in controlled draws.  Jones, Maloney and freshman midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) paced the Bears with five draws apiece.

Juniors Chelsey Grabowski (South Hadley, Mass.) and Emily Walsh (Hadley, Mass.) scored for Elms, while freshman Julie Hurley (Palmer, Mass.) made nine saves in goal.

The Bears wrap up regular season play next Saturday when they travel to Framingham State University for a noontime NEWLA match with the Rams.  Bridgewater can equal the program record of 15 wins with a victory over Framingham.  Elms hosts non-conference foe Anna Maria College on Wednesday night at seven.

Notes: The victory also marked the 71st in the six-year coaching career of Bridgewater State's Erika Smith.  Smith has produced an overall mark of 71-31 since 2006 as she is just one win behind Josh Hexter's (1998-2004) program record of 72 wins (72-42)…Seniors Jones, Maloney, Lennon, Quimby, Weber, Bethany Bush (Littleton, Mass.), Kasey Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.), and Kiley Brown (Ashby, Mass.) were honored prior to the game.
