Women's Lacrosse Posts Key 22-9 NEWLA Win over Castleton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore attack Jill Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) notched a career high six goals and three assists to lead the Bridgewater State University Bears to a key 22-9 New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) victory over visiting Castleton State College on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater remains unbeaten on the season with the win as the Bears improve to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in NEWLA play.  The ten straight wins is the second longest winning streak in program history. Last season, the Bears won 11 straight games.  Castleton falls to 5-3 and 1-1 in the Alliance.

Senior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) added five goals, a pair of assists and three draw controls for the hosts, while junior attack Kristin White (Pelham, Mass.) chipped in with four goals and a helper.  White reached the 100-goal milestone on her third marker of the afternoon.

Bridgewater held a 32-17 shot advantage for the game and converted on 7 of 9 free position attempts.  Caramello notched three free position goals while Jones netted two.

The Bears trailed 2-1 early in the contest, but three consecutive goals by senior Courtney Lennon (Medfield, Mass.), White and freshman Nicki Giordano (Huntington Station, N.Y.) gave BSU a 4-2 advantage.  After Castleton cut the deficit to 4-3, Bridgewater ran off eight straight goals to put the game well out of reach. Caramello tallied three goals and an assist during the 8-0 run.

The Bears would head into the intermission with a 15-7 edge and held the visiting Spartans to just two goals in the second half.  The final score of 22-9 would be Bridgewater's largest lead of the game.

BSU senior goaltender Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) turned aside five shots to post her tenth win of the season. Lennon finished with two goals and an assists, while Giordano found the back of the net twice.  Senior defender Kasey Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season and also added an assist.

Junior midfielder Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) paced Castleton State with three goals and freshman attack Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) scored once and dished out three assists to go along with four draws.  The Spartans held a 20-12 advantage in controlled draws including an 8-1 edge in the second half.

The Bears will travel to Tufts University on Tuesday at 5:00 PM for a non-conference affair with the Jumbos.  Castleton heads to Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Cadets at 4.
