Women's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten with 9-6 Win over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University' women's lacrosse team held  host Wheaton College to a season-low tying six goals as the Bears posted a 9-6 victory on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference clash at Keefe Field.

The Bears keep their unblemished season intact at 7-0 as they are off to the best start in program history.  The Lyons fall to 2-5.

Bridgewater State was led by senior Jenny Jones' (Framingham, MA) three goals and one assist.  Classmate Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) and freshman Nicki Giordano (Huntington Station, NY) each scored twice, while senior goalkeeper Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) made 10 stops.

Wheaton senior Tess Meyer (Concord, NH) had a hand in four of Wheaton's six goals with two tallies and a pair of assists, while freshman Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, CT) turned in a hat trick.  Senior goalie Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA) recorded a career-best 17 saves.

Jones, Giordano and Lennon each scored through the midway point of the opening half, giving the visitors a 3-1 edge, before Meyer and junior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, RI) tallied 18 seconds apart to knot the score at three.  Bridgewater State answered with the stanza's final three goals, with Lennon and junior Kristin White (Pelham, MA) scoring in the last minute, to double up the Lyons by a 6-3 count at the break.

Meyer's free-position goal at 24:33 of the second half brought Wheaton to within two but the Lyons would come no closer, as the Bears went on another 3-0 run for a 9-4 advantage with 18:10 to play.  Bridgewater State scored its three goals during a 5:51 span with Jones, Giordano and senior Patricia Maloney (Walpole, MA) all connecting.  Meyer twice connected with DeSantis at 17:09 and 14:20 to make the score 9-6 by the 14:20 mark, but those two tallies proved to be the game's last.

Bridgewater held a 33-25 shot advantage for the game while Wheaton had the edge in draws at 9-8.  The six Wheaton goals marked the fewest the Bears have allowed in a game this season.
