Jones, Lennon Lead Women's Lacrosse to 20-12 Win over Vassar

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Senior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass.) scored nine goals and senior midfielder Courtney Lennon (Medfield, Mass.) notched four goals and seven assists to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 20-12 victory over Vassar College on Monday afternoon in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Senior midfielder Sarah Warner (Ipswich, Mass.) paced Vassar with three goals and three assists to go along with three ground balls and five caused turnovers.

A Vassar goal by junior attack Maura McCarthy (Blue Bell, Pa.) tied the game at 3-3 with 16:22 to play in the first half, but the Bears went on the offensive, outscoring the Brewers 6-1 over the final 14 minutes of the opening stanza.  Bridgewater would lead 9-4 at the intermission.

Warner scored for Vassar to open the second half, but that would be as close as the Brewers would get.  Bridgewater would outscore Vassar 11-7 the rest of the way with Jones scoring six of her nine goals in the final stanza.

With her nine markers, Jones is now just two shy of Shannon Manning's BSU all-time mark of 228 goals.  Lennon moved past Ann Silvia (145 goals) into sixth place on the Bears' career goal scoring list as she now has 146 in four seasons at BSU.

Senior netminder Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass.) made 13 saves for Bridgewater.  Senior defender Kasey Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.) notched three ground balls and two caused turnovers and also added an assist.

Senior Nicole Engelhardt (Longhorn, Pa.) made eight saves in goal for the Brewers.

Bridgewater State plays Potsdam State on Tuesday night at 7 in the annual Spring Fling event in Florida which opens the women's lacrosse season. Vassar is back in action on Wednesday night at 7 against Colby-Sawyer.
