Manning, DeMaio Lead Women's Lacrosse to 23-9 Win

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) tallied five goals and six assists, and senior attack Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY) scored six goals and notched four assists, to lead the Bridgewater State College Bears to a convincing 23-9 victory over Worcester State College in a New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) matchup in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater State improves to 6-4 overall on the season with the win.  The Bears also even their NEWLA record at 1-1.  Worcester falls to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Alliance.

The Bears scored the first seven goals of the game and took a commanding 18-3 lead into halftime. DeMaio scored five of her game-high six goals in the opening stanza and also added an assist, while Manning recorded four goals and five assists.  Manning’s 11-point performance increases her career total to 313.  She needs just 24 points to break Paula Habel’s program mark of 336 points set back in 2003.  

Bridgewater outshot the Lancers by a margin of 39-25, including a 31-12  shot advantage in the first half.  The Bears also held a 20-14 edge in draw controls for the game.

Senior goaltender Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) made ten saves to post her sixth win of the season for BSC.  Junior Katie Weber (Arlington, MA) played the final 12 minutes and ten seconds in relief of Griffin and turned aside two shots.

Junior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) added three goals and two assists for the Bears, while junior midfielder Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) chipped in with three goals and an assist.  Jones tied Laura Swart (2000-2003) for fourth place on the Bears’ all-time scoring list with her 222nd career point.

Freshman midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) recorded the first three goals of her collegiate career, and fellow rookie Sammi Salverio (Hanson, MA) also potted her first career goal.

Worcester State was led by senior midfielder Kim Vail (West Newbury, MA) and junior midfielder Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA).   Vail scored four goals while MacIntyre registered a goal and four assists.  Sophomore netminder Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) made 12 saves between the pipes for the Lancers.

Bridgewater State will host NEWLA foe Becker College on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM, while Worcester entertains conference rival Elms College at noon also on Saturday.
