Women's Lacrosse Posts 22-7 Victory over RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State College women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season as the Bears rolled to a 22-7 victory over host Rhode Island College this afternoon in Providence.

Juniors Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) and Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY) paced the Bears as the duo combined for 19 points.  Manning finished with a game-high 11 points as she registered five goals and six assists.  DeMaio led all players with seven goals while also adding an assist.

Bridgewater State (1-3) opened up a 7-0 lead as Manning, who scored three times in the first 15 minutes, and four others found the back of the net. Manning added another goal, while RIC (1-2) freshman midfielder Nichole Drolet (Somersworth, NH) and junior midfielder Emily Conte (North Providence, RI) were the only Anchorwomen goal-scorers, as the Bears took an 11-2 lead into halftime.

The Bears quickly put three goals on the board in the second half and cruised to the win. Freshman defender Kiera Garvey (Chelmsford, MA) picked up six ground balls. BSC got up by as many as 15 goals twice in the second stanza including the final tally of 22-7.

The Bears held a 40-25 shot advantage as well as a 19-11 edge in draws controlled.  DeMaio and sophomore Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) tallied three draws apiece.

Junior netminder Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) allowed just two goals and made ten saves in 30 minutes of work to pick up her first win of the season.  Griffin (1-2) played the field during the second half and notched a pair of goals, the first two of her career.

Sophomore Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) added three goals and an assist for the Bears, while Jones chipped in with a pair of goals to go along with an assist.

RIC sophomore goalkeeper Hilary Switzer (Woonsocket, RI) took the loss (1-2), making six saves in the first half, before giving way to freshman Chiara Razzino (Providence, RI) for the second half. Drolet finished with a team-high three goals.

Bridgewater State travels to Framingham State College on Monday for a four o'clock game with the Rams.
