Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten in MASCAC Play with 66-55 Win Over Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team remained perfect in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon.

Junior Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) scored 27 points as the Bears defeated Worcester State University, 66-55.

BSU (8-9) is now 4-0 in the MASCAC and has won six straight games against the Lancers (1-15, 0-3).

Grassi, who reached the 1,000-point mark on Wednesday, made three 3-pointers and contributed four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

She is now 16th on the BSU's all-time scoring list with 1,037 points.

Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) added 14 points with three 3-pointers, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Bradbury is now tied for third place (along with Elisha Homich) on the Bears' all-time three-point list with 159 career trifectas.

Also in double figures for the Bears, who were without point guard Caroline Tripp (Plymouth, Mass.) and forward Jordan Peebles (Middleboro, Mass.), was Sophia Gaucher (Lakeville, Mass.) with 11 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Worcester State was led by Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.) with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four steals while Lena Waldron (Quincy, Mass.) added 10 points and six rebounds.

The Bears made only 7 of 31 shots from 3-point range and hit 38 percent overall from the field. BSU's defense limited the Lancers to 30 percent shooting, including 1 of 11 from 3-point range, and the Bears took advantage of 24 Worcester State turnovers.

BSU held a 15-13 lead after one quarter and was up, 32-25, at halftime before owning a 49-42 lead going into the final quarter.

The Bears made only 6 of 18 shots in the first quarter and didn't score the game's first field goal until Gaucher made a layup 3:18 in for a 3-1 lead.

BSU was down, 8-7, before going on an 8-0 run that included a 3-pointer, foul shot and layup by Grassi and a layup by Gaucher for a 15-8 lead before the Lancers scored the last five points of the quarter.

The Bears were up, 19-15, with 7:09 to go in the half but went nearly two minutes before scoring again on a Grassi free throw for a 20-17 lead.

After the Lancers took the lead, Emily Quinn (Lancaster, Mass.) made a layup to give BSU a 22-21 advantage and Bradbury and Grassi followed with 3-pointers for a 28-21 lead.

After being up by seven at the break, a Grassi layup in the opening minute of the third quarter made it 34-25 and three foul shots by Bradbury pushed the lead into double figures at 39-27.

The Lancers closed within five before Arielle Cleveland (Groveland, Mass.) beat the buzzer with a layup for a 49-42 lead after three quarters.

The Bears opened their largest lead to that point at 57-44 1:21 into the final quarter on 3-pointers by Grassi and Gaucher, and Cleveland followed with a foul shot for a 58-44 advantage.

Hurynowicz got the Lancers within 58-51 with 4:55 left by hitting a pair of foul shots but that is as close as they would get.

A 3-pointer by Bradbury put BSU up, 61-51, a steal and layup by Grassi made it 63-52 and a 3-pointer by Grassi sealed it at 66-55.

The Bears have another MASCAC road game Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they face Fitchburg State. The Lancers are at Salem State Wednesday at 5 p.m.
