Women's Basketball Drops 58-44 Decision to Host Bowdoin at Coastal Classic

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team posted a 58-44 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in the opening game of the Coastal Classic at Bowdoin's Morrell Gymnasium.

The host Polar Bears improve to 3-0 on the season while the Bears fall to 0-2.

Sophomore guard Carly Davey (Westford, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the way for the hosts while senior forward Callie Godfrey (Cheshire, Conn.) added 14.

Senior forward Kylie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with 13 points as she went 3-for-5 from the floor and 7-for-10 at the free throw line. Senior guard Carolyn Tripp (Plymouth, Mass.) added 12 points for the Bears.

With the Bears trailing 17-11 after one, BSU senior guard Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the first five points of the second quarter on a layup and three-pointer to make it a one-point game. Bridgewater, however, would not score again in the period. The Polar Bears closed out the first half with a 16-0 run to take a 33-16 lead into the intermission.

The Polar Bears shot 42.4% (14-33) in the first half but went just 2-for-16 (12.5%) from behind the arc. The Bears connected on 28.6% (6-21) of their first-half field goal attempts including 2-for-8 (25%) from three-point range.

Davey led all players with 12 points over the first 20 minutes while Bradbury scored eight points in the first half including a pair of three-pointers.

Bridgewater bounced back with a solid effort in the third quarter outscoring the Polar Bears 17-10 in the period to close the gap to 43-33. The Bears knocked down 7 of 11 field goal attempts in the session and went 3-for-4 at the line. Grassi and Tripp paced the visitors in the third quarter with nine and six points, respectively.

The Bears cut the deficit to eight (47-39) following a Tripp layup with 4 ½ minutes left to play. The Polar Bears, however, responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Sydney Jones (Jr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) trifecta, to make it a 15-point game (54-39) with just 1:39 remaining.

Bowdoin shot just 37.3% (22-59) for the game including 3-for-23 (13%) from three-point range. The Polar Bears had success at the free throw line converting 11 of 13 (84.6%) at the stripe.

Bridgewater finished with shooting percentages of 42.5% (17-40) from the floor, 27.3% (3-11) from behind the arc and 58.3% (7-12) at the line.

The Bears turned the ball over 28 times which led to a 19-12 Bowdoin advantage in points off turnovers. The Polar Bears also held a 32-18 edge in points in the paint.

The Coastal Classic wraps up tomorrow with Bridgewater State facing off against the University of Southern Maine at four o'clock and Bowdoin taking on Whittier College at 6:30.
