Softball Sweeps Mass. Maritime to Clinch MASCAC Regular Season Crown

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team clinched the program's second straight and 25th overall Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular season title as the Bears swept a doubleheader with conference foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.

With the sweep, the Bears improve to 25-11 on the season and remain unbeaten in MASCAC play with a 12-0 conference mark.  Bridgewater will be the top seed for next week's MASCAC Tournament.  The visiting Buccaneers fall to 0-18 (0-12 MASCAC).

BSU freshman pitcher Kathleen Bailey (Bayport, N.Y.) tossed a perfect game in the opener.  Bailey retired all 15 batters she faced with nine strikeouts.

Freshman left fielder Breanna Shaffer (Plainville, Mass.) paced the Bears' offense in the twinbill as she was 10-for-10 at the plate with her first collegiate home run, a double, five runs scored and nine RBI.

Freshman Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) worked three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win in game two for the hosts.  McCarthy (1-3) gave up just one hit and fanned five.  Freshman starter Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) gave up one unearned run on two hits over two innings with five strikeout in her first pitching appearance of the season.

Both teams wrap up MASCAC play on Saturday afternoon.  The Bears travel to North Adams, Massachusetts to battle the Trailblazers of MCLA, while the Buccaneers head to Framingham State University to take on the Rams.  Both doubleheaders are slated to get underway at one.
