Softball Drops Pair of Games to Richard Stockton, Wheaton

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bridgewater State University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusick Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.  The Bears (1-3) were no-hit in a 7-0 loss to Richard Stockton College and then dropped a 5-1 decision to Wheaton College of Illinois.

Stockton's Michelle Pietrocola retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced in the 7-0 no-hitter as she gave up just a walk to Jocelyn Bettencourt (Plymouth, Mass.) with one out in the bottom of the second inning.

The Ospreys scored in each of the first three innings off BSU starter Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Conn.), including a pair of runs in the first on back-to-back RBI singles by Stephanie Darrow and Danielle Cohen.

That would be more than enough runs for Pietrocola who set down the last 17 batters in order.  She fanned ten batters in the game including the side in the fifth inning.

Dunn (0-1) worked the first five frames in her season debut giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.

Nicole Scanlon led Stockton's eighth-hit attack as she went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.

The Bears were hurt by four errors in their 5-1 setback to Wheaton as the miscues led to five unearned runs.

BSU's Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) went the distance in the loss giving up the five unearned runs on eight hits.  White (1-2) walked two and struck out five.

The Bears scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Conn.) reached on an error, moved to third on Anna Duncan's (Bellingham, Mass.) double and scored on a wild pitch.

Bridgewater managed just four hits in the game as Duncan led the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

After an off day, the Bears return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Bethany Lutheran College (1:00) and Albright College (3:00).
