CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Bridgewater State University softball team downed St. Mary's College (Indiana), 2-0, in the season-opener for both teams on Sunday morning. The Bears dropped a 3-1 decision to Franklin and Marshall in their second game of the day.

In the 2-0 victory over St. Mary's, Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout while striking out five.  After giving up a leadoff single in the second, White retired 14 straight batters and 18 of the last 19.

The Bears pushed across the only runs of the game in the second inning on a two-run homer by Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

Callie Selner pitched well in the loss for St. Mary's (0-1) as she gave up just the two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Bridgewater jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 3-1 loss to Franklin and Marshall as the Bears loaded the bases in the top of the first. A trio of Bridgewater runners took off from the basepaths, swiping second, third and home plate to take the one-run advantage.

F&M quickly answered in the bottom of the second with an unearned run to knot the contest at 1-1. Rachel Laufer reached on a Bridgewater error, advanced to second with a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Caitlin Brust's RBI single.

The game remained tied until Sam DeNoville came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and smashed a two-run homer to right field, putting the Diplomats up 3-1.

Kaitlin Zampino went four innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four batters. Justine Lohrey (1-1) came on in relief in the top of the fifth and hurled three scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win.

Malorie Sassaman went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a trio of singles to lead the Diplomats' six-hit attack.

White (1-1) went the distance in the circle for the Bears in the loss as she gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.  Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored BSU's lone run.

Bridgewater returns to action on Monday when the Bears take on Richard Stockton at one and Wheaton College (Illinois) at three.
