Softball Splits MASCAC Doubleheader with Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield senior first baseman Cassy Jouannet (Conway) was 3 for 3 with three RBI in a 5-2 opening-game victory, and Bridgewater senior first baseman Penny King (Hanover) drove in four runs in the second game as the Bears held on for a 6-5 triumph in a MASCAC doubleheader split on Saturday, April 9.

Westfield is 3-1 in the MASCAC and 10-11 overall. Bridgewater is 2-2 and 10-12.

In the opener, Jouannet tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning at 2-2 with an RBI triple then pounded an RBI double in the Owls' three-run uprising in the sixth inning.

Westfield sophomore catcher Brittany Dussault (Chicopee) delivered the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the sixth that snapped the 2-2 tie.

Jouannet (3 for 3) and Dussault (2 for 3) teamed up for all five of Westfield's hits in the game.  Jouannet also drove in Westfield's first run with a single up the middle in the second inning.

Junior Madeline Tomich (Alford) survived a slow start to improve her pitching record to 9-2. Tomich allowed six hits (four in the first two innings) and one walk and struck out eight.

King was 2 for 3 with a double in the opener. Tracy Sanko (Windsor, CT) – who had an RBI – was the losing pitcher.

King delivered the big blow in the second game – a three-run double in the Bear's four-run uprising in the fifth inning. The two-out smash to the left-center field gap gave the Bears a 5-3 lead. King then scored on Casey Hill's (Randolph) RBI single.

Westfield, which led 3-1 lead after two innings, scored an unearned run in the fourth on Lisa Policelli's (Tewksbury) RBI single to make it 6-4.

The Owls threatened in their final at bat but left a runner stranded at second. Kristyn Carroll (Brockton) lined a one-out single and scored on Alicia Gardner's (Athol) double over the left fielder's head. But Sanko came on in relief to record two quick outs to end the game and notch her second save.

Bridgewater outhit Westfield, 10-8. King was 2 for 3 with two doubles and her four RBI and Hill was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Michaela Ferreira (Fall River) was 2 for 4 with a double.

Carroll was 3 for 4 with a triple and RBI and Gardner was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

Meghan Dunn (Colchester, CT) was the winning pitcher, improving her record to 7-2. She walked one and fanned two.  Losing pitcher Kerry Alcott (Groton, MA) pitched six complete innings, walking four and striking out three.
