Dramatic Comeback Lifts Softball to Doubleheader Split with Babson

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a dramatic 10-9 win over Babson College in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Park.  In the opening game of the twinbill, Babson cruised to a 9-1 victory.

In the nightcap, the Bears rallied in the seventh without hitting the ball out of the infield.  Sophomore Meghan Dunn walked to lead off the frame and freshman pinch runner Chelsie Babcock moved to second on a ground out.  Senior Heather McPherson then reached on an infield single and Babcock came around to score as McPherson got into a rundown and safely reached second.

Following a strikeout, senior Penny King singled sending McPherson to third. A walk to sophomore Brianna Strecker loaded the bases and junior Michaela Ferreira rapped a base hit towards the middle scoring both McPherson and King to pull the Bears to within a run.  On the play, Strecker moved to third and Ferreira to second as the Beavers tried to cut down King at the plate.  Moments later a wild pitch brought home Strecker with the tying run and sent Ferreira to third.  Junior Jordan McDermott then won it for the Bears as she beat out a slap grounder to third as Ferreira raced home with the winning run.

Babson appeared well on their way to a doubleheader sweep as the Beavers raced out to the 9-5 lead thanks to a 4-for-4, five RBI performance from sophomore Catie Funk.  Funk singled and scored a run during the Beavers' four-run first inning.  She doubled home two runs in the second and added another two-run double in the fourth.  Funk belted a solo home run in the sixth which gave the visitors a 9-5 lead.

Ferreira finished 3-for-4 at the plate in game two as she knocked in four runs.  Ferreira singled in a run in the Bears' three-run first inning and added an RBI double in the third.  McPherson went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.  Dunn went the distance in the circle as she improved to 5-2 on the season.

In the opener, Funk led the Beaver's 12-hit attack as she finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Junior Lisa Wojnar went 3-for-3 and reached safely in all four of her plate appearances. Wojnar belted a two-run homer in the Beavers' four-run fifth inning and singled and scored in the seventh.  She was also hit by a pitch and came around to score in the first when Babson jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Ashleigh Phelps had two hits in four at bats including an RBI single in the first and a run scoring double in the seventh.

Freshman Christina Miquel went the distance in the circle to post her fourth win of the season.  Miquel (4-1) scattered six hits, walked four and struck out two.

Bridgewater scored their lone run of the game in the fifth as McPherson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third, and scored on an RBI single by McDermott.

Strecker went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bears in the opener with a pair of singles.

Bridgewater returns to the diamond on Saturday afternoon when the Bears open MASCAC play at home with a noontime doubleheader with the Rams of Framingham State.
