BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team swept a doubleheader against host Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater.  The Cougars came away with a 6-3 win in the opening game of the twinbill and completed the sweep with a 9-0 triumph in the nightcap.

The Cougars even their season record at 6-6 with the two wins.  Bridgewater slips to 5-7 as the Bears have dropped five of their last six games.

Junior Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.)  belted a grand slam and classmate Erin Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) added a two-run homer to lead Clark to the 6-3 victory in game one.

Lennon's slam, her first home run of the season, staked the visiting Cougars to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Bridgewater plated three runs in the bottom half of the third inning highlighted by a big two-run single by junior Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.).

Murphy would connect for the two-run blast in the seventh as she turned the Cougars one-run advantage into a 6-3 lead.  After allowing the first two batters to reach in the inning, Bridgewater sophomore starter Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Ct.) looked as if she was going to get out of the jam after inducing a double play ground out.  Murphy, however, drilled an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence to give the Cougars a three-run cushion.

Senior right-hander Sarah Carter (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win in the circle for Clark. Carter (3-4) went the distance allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Dunn (1-3) suffered her first loss of the season in a complete game effort as she gave up six runs on six hits and six walks while striking out three.

Ferreira, classmate Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Heather McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) finished with two hits apiece to account for six of the Bears' seven safeties in game one.

In game two, sophomore righty Nicole Meuse (Hudson, Mass.) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout.  Meuse (3-2) walked three and struck out five as the game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Clark took advantage of five Bridgewater errors in the game scoring five unearned runs in the second inning and plating four more (three unearned) in the fifth.

Lennon and sophomore Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Cougars' nine-hit attack in game two with two hits apiece.  Lennon went 2-for-3 while Melkonian finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap.  They each belted two-run doubles in the five-run second inning.

BSU sophomore Courtney Gregoire (Dartmouth, Mass.) gave up nine runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Gregoire (1-2) walked three and struck out one.

Junior Kate Youngstrom (Holden, Mass.), sophomore Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Ct.) and freshman Kelly Fahey (Milton, Mass.) had the three Bridgewater hits.
