Softball Drops a Pair of Games to Ohio Wesleyan & New Jersey City

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University softball team dropped a pair of games to Ohio Wesleyan and New Jersey City on Wednesday afternoon at the Gene Cusick Collegiate Classic in Cape Coral, Florida.

Despite accumulating 27 hits in the two games, the Bears fell to Ohio Wesleyan, 12-6, and dropped a tough 15-14 decision in ten innings to New Jersey City.

In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan broke a 6-6 tie with a run in the sixth and then pulled away with a five-run seventh inning.   The Bishops banged out 11 hits in the win and took advantage of six Bridgewater State errors.

Junior Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) paced Bridgewater's 12-hit attack as she went 4-for-4 in the loss with two stolen bases and a run scored.  Senior Casey Hill (Randolph, Mass.) added a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.

In game two, the Bears offense erupted for 14 runs on 15 hits, but still fell short on the scoreboard.  Bridgewater's defense was shaky again as the team committed six more errors.

Trailing 7-4, Bridgewater pushed across six runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a three-run lead.  That lead was short-lived however as New Jersey responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game at 10-10.

Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh inning as the game went into extra frames.  Bridgewater plated four runs in the top of the eighth, but New Jersey was able to answer once again with four runs of their own.

After holding the Bears scoreless in the ninth and tenth, New Jersey won the game in the bottom of the tenth as a two-out bloop single drove in the game-winning run.

Sophomore Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) was impressive at the plate for the Bears as she was a perfect 6-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. The home run was the first of her career.

Ferreira swung a hot bat again in game two as she finished 2-for-4 with a pair of walks, a run scored and three batted in.  Senior Penny King (Hanover, Mass.) and junior Shanna Lathrop (Hopedale, Mass.) came off the bench to go 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively.  King scored two runs and drove in two, while Lathrop crossed the plate twice and also added an RBI.

Senior Tracey Sanko (Windsor, Ct.) suffered the loss in relief of sophomore starter Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Ct.).  Sanko (0-3) worked the last 2 2/3 innings giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.  Dunn went the first seven and was touched for 13 runs, only five of which were earned, on 13 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Off the 15 runs that New Jersey City scored, only a half dozen were earned due to the Bears' six costly errors.
