KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State College softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Division II Bloomfield College on Thursday at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
The second game of the doubleheader was not official as
it was stopped in the top of the fifth inning due to rain and
severe weather. The Bears wrap up their Florida trip with a
record of 5-4.
Bloomfield (3-2) fell behind Bridgewater early in game one as the
Bears scored three unearned runs off BC starter Brianne
Moore in the first inning. In a strange play with
two outs and a runner on first in a steady rain, senior
Meghan Noyes (Stoughton, MA) ripped a sharp ground
ball towards the middle which bounced off the Bloomfield second
baseman and rolled all the way to the left-centerfield fence.
By the time the ball was retrieved, Noyes had circled the bases to
give BSC a 2-0 lead. Junior Casey Hill
(Randolph, MA) then followed with a solo homer, the first of her
career, for the third run of the inning.
Bloomfield's bats remained quiet the first time through the lineup,
but they finally got the breakthrough they needed as Ashton
Corley lined an RBI double to the gap in left-centerfield
to get the Deacons on the board. Moore followed with an RBI
double as BC closed the gap to 3-2.
Bloomfield would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning
when Amanda Bartels drove a two-run double to left
center and Ashleigh Williams belted a two-run
homer to center.
Moore (3-0) settled down and pitched out of some jams the rest of
the way to pick up her third win of the young season.
Hill went 2-for-3 for Bridgewater State with a single to go along with her home run. Junior Tracey Sanko (Windsor, CT) was 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and a run scored.
Senior Kaitlin Morelli (Milford, MA) pitched the first three innings for the Bears as she allowed two runs on four hits. Morelli left with a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Courtney Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA) took
the loss in relief as she was touched for four runs on three hits
and a walk in two innings of work. Gregoire (0-1) also struck
out one. Sanko hurled a scoreless seventh inning with a walk
and a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Bloomfield scored nine runs over the first four
innings. The game was unofficial, however, as it was stopped
by the umpires with one out and Bridgewater State batting in the
top of the fifth inning due to the severe weather.
