BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College softball team swept a doubleheader versus the University of Southern Maine this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater took the first game by a score of 16-5 and completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory in game two.  Both games went just five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The Bears improve to 23-9 overall with their sixth straight win.  Southern Maine falls to 6-30 on the season.

Sophomore Tracey Sanko (Windsor, CT) swiped three bases in the twinbill as she eclipsed the Bears' single-season stolen base mark of 27 set by Kristy Wilbur in 1997.  Sanko has stolen 28 bases in 31 attempts this season.

Bridgewater pounded out seven home runs in the doubleheader including three in the third inning of game two.

In game one, the Bears banged out 16 hits en route to the 16-5 victory.  Senior Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, MA) went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBI, while sophomore Heather McPherson (Mansfield, MA) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Sprague and junior Meghan Noyes (Stoughton, MA) belted back-to-back home runs during a five-run second inning. Senior Stacy Capodiece (East Lyme, CT) and sophomore Penny King (Hanover, MA) also homered for the Bears in game one.  Capodiece hit a solo shot in the third inning while King added a three-run blast later in the frame

Sanko went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in game one.  Junior Lauren Cucinotta (Franklin, MA) also had multiple hits as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Senior Stephanie Pierce (Worcester, MA) earned the win in the circle for the Bears.  Pierce (7-4) went all five innings giving up five runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

In game two, senior right-hander Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) tossed a complete game, two-hitter as she posted her sixth shutout of the season.  Verronneau (10-4) walked just one and struck out seven.

Capodiece, Sanko and senior Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) all homered in a six-run third inning for BSC.   LeBlanc belted her team-leading fourth dinger of the season to lead off the frame, while Capodiece and Sanko went back-to back later in the inning.

LeBlanc went 2-for-3 in game two, while Capodiece finished 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI.  Sanko was 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.  After singling to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Sanko stole second base to tie the school mark and then swiped third to break it. Sanko would come around to score BSC's first run of the game on an RBI ground out by McPherson.

Noyes led Bridgewater's 13-hit attack in game two as she was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a stolen base and two runs scored. Sophomore Kate Youngstrom (Holden, MA) was also perfect at the plate as she went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.
