WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State and
Bridgewater State split a doubleheader in key Massachusetts State
College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) softball action on Friday,
April 10th.
Westfield came back to win the opener, 6-2, with Kim Brennan
(Douglas, MA) delivering a three-run double. Bridgewater State took
the second game, 4-2, in dramatic fashion as Penny King (Hanover,
MA) smashed a grand slam homer in the fourth inning.
Westfield is now 14-10 overall and 5-1 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater
is 17-8 and 4-2.
Bridgewater jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead in the opener,
collecting four of its seven hits in the inning. Westfield scored
on a run in the second on an RBI double by Danielle
Lutenegger (Sunderland, MA).
The Owls took a 4-2 third-inning lead when Brennan cleared the
bases with her double to left center. Westfield tacked on two more
runs in its final at bat on an RBI single by Jackie
Mason (Florida, MA), followed by a double steal by Mason
and Gia Calabrese (West Springfield, MA), who
scored from third base.
Mason and Katie Gorman (Feeding Hills, MA) both
rapped two singles for Westfield.
Heather McPherson (Mansfield, MA) was 2 for 3 for
the Bears.
Winning pitcher Chelsea Sylvia (South Dartmouth,
MA) gave up seven hits and a walk and struck out four in seven
innings.
In the nightcap, Westfield took a 1-0 second-inning lead when
Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, MA) ripped a
two-out double and scored on an RBI single by Mason.
The Bears scored their runs with two outs and the bases empty.
Westfield freshman pitcher Madeline Tomich
(Alford, MA) walked three straight batters to load the bases.
King, the number nine hitter, fouled off four pitches before
slamming her towering homer on a 2-2 count just inside the left
field foul pole, giving the Bears a 4-1 lead.
Westfield scored a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Gorman, but
earlier in the inning Mason was thrown out at home on a double
steal attempt.
The Owls also had a runner thrown out at home in the sixth.
Allison Allen (Peabody, MA) singled and was gunned
down attempting to score on a Calabrese double.
In the seventh, Westfield had runners and first and second with one
out when Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) - the
losing pitcher in the first game - recorded the pitching save.
Verronneau got Gorman to foul out on a nice grab near the fence by
catcher Bridget Engwer (Wrentham, MA).
Kristyn Carroll (Brockton, MA) grounded out to end
the game.
Westfield out-hit Bridgewater, 10-7. Mason was 2 for 4 with a
double and RBI and Gorman was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Brennan was 2
for 3 with a double.
Bridgewater leadoff batter Tracey Sanko (Windsor,
CT) was 2 for 4 with a triple and Rachel Sprague
(Duxbury, MA) was 2 for 4. King also rapped a single in addition to
her game-winning grand slam.
