WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State and Bridgewater State split a doubleheader in key Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) softball action on Friday, April 10th.

Westfield came back to win the opener, 6-2, with Kim Brennan (Douglas, MA) delivering a three-run double. Bridgewater State took the second game, 4-2, in dramatic fashion as Penny King (Hanover, MA) smashed a grand slam homer in the fourth inning.

Westfield is now 14-10 overall and 5-1 in the MASCAC. Bridgewater is 17-8 and 4-2.

Bridgewater jumped to a 2-0 first-inning lead in the opener, collecting four of its seven hits in the inning. Westfield scored on a run in the second on an RBI double by Danielle Lutenegger (Sunderland, MA).

The Owls took a 4-2 third-inning lead when Brennan cleared the bases with her double to left center. Westfield tacked on two more runs in its final at bat on an RBI single by Jackie Mason (Florida, MA), followed by a double steal by Mason and Gia Calabrese (West Springfield, MA), who scored from third base.

Mason and Katie Gorman (Feeding Hills, MA) both rapped two singles for Westfield.

Heather McPherson (Mansfield, MA) was 2 for 3 for the Bears.

Winning pitcher Chelsea Sylvia (South Dartmouth, MA) gave up seven hits and a walk and struck out four in seven innings.

In the nightcap, Westfield took a 1-0 second-inning lead when Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, MA) ripped a two-out double and scored on an RBI single by Mason.

The Bears scored their runs with two outs and the bases empty. Westfield freshman pitcher Madeline Tomich (Alford, MA) walked three straight batters to load the bases.

King, the number nine hitter, fouled off four pitches before slamming her towering homer on a 2-2 count just inside the left field foul pole, giving the Bears a 4-1 lead.

Westfield scored a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Gorman, but earlier in the inning Mason was thrown out at home on a double steal attempt.

The Owls also had a runner thrown out at home in the sixth. Allison Allen (Peabody, MA) singled and was gunned down attempting to score on a Calabrese double.

In the seventh, Westfield had runners and first and second with one out when Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) - the losing pitcher in the first game - recorded the pitching save. Verronneau got Gorman to foul out on a nice grab near the fence by catcher Bridget Engwer (Wrentham, MA). Kristyn Carroll (Brockton, MA) grounded out to end the game.

Westfield out-hit Bridgewater, 10-7. Mason was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI and Gorman was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Brennan was 2 for 3 with a double.

Bridgewater leadoff batter Tracey Sanko (Windsor, CT) was 2 for 4 with a triple and Rachel Sprague (Duxbury, MA) was 2 for 4. King also rapped a single in addition to her game-winning grand slam.
