BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Rhode Island College softball team swept a doubleheader with host Bridgewater State College on Tuesday afternoon at BSC's Alumni Park.  The Anchorwomen won the opening game, 9-2, and completed the sweep with a decisive 13-0 five-inning, mercy rule win in game two.

The Anchorwomen, who were ranked 23rd in the latest NFCA Division III poll, improve to 18-2 on the season.  RIC extends its' winning streak to 12 games with the two wins.  Bridgewater State falls to 15-5 as the Bears saw their modest five-game winning streak come to an end.

In game one, the Bears opened up a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by senior Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, MA).  The rest of the game and the doubleheader however belonged to RIC.

Sophomore Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, RI) quickly erased the 1-0 deficit as she blasted a two-run home run in the top of the second.  DeNoncour made it a 4-1 game with a two-run single in the third.

Rhode Island opened the floodgates with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles by sophomores Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) and Laura Kostenblatt (Keene, NH).

Sophomore Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) got the win in the circle for the Anchorwomen in game one.  Neece (5-1) allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work a she walked three and struck out three.  Fellow sophomore Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) earned her sixth save as she hurled the last three innings.  Berard gave up a run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

DeNoncour finished 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI.  Sophomore Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) went 3-for-3 and scored a run to lead the Anchorwomen's ten-hit attack.  

Senior Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) went 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored for the Bears who left nine runners on base including two in each of the first three innings.  Senior Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) went the distance in the circle for the Bears as she suffered her second loss of the season.

In game two, RIC banged out 17 hits as the Anchorwomen cruised to the 13-0 thumping.  Junior Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) and Berard combined on a two-hit shutout as the game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Deveines improved to 8-0 on the season as she allowed two hits and two walks with one strikeout in four innings of work.  Berard worked a one-two-three fifth inning to secure the shutout.

Seven different players had at least two hits apiece for the Anchorwomen.  Perry went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and three RBI.  Sophomore Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) paced the 17-hit attack as she finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.  DeNoncour was 1-for-2 in the nightcap with a run and three more runs batted in.

Sophomore Tracey Sanko (Windsor, CT) and freshman Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, MA) had the only hits in the game for the Bears.  Senior Stephanie Pierce (Worcester, MA) was tagged with the loss in the circle as she dropped to 6-3 on the season.   

Bridgewater State will host nationally ranked Tufts University in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon with game one getting underway at 3:00 PM.  RIC travels to Keene State College on Saturday (1:00 PM) for a Little East Conference twinbill with the Owls.
