Softball Sweeps MASCAC Twinbill with Mass. Maritime

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College softball team swept a doubleheader with Mass. Maritime Academy this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater. The Bears took the first game by a score of 20-5, and completed the sweep with a 20-0 victory in game two.  Both game were stopped in the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

With the pair of wins, BSC improves to 16-14 overall and remain undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 MASCAC mark.  The Bears have now won five straight games and ten of their last eleven.  Mass. Maritime falls to 1-14 on the season and 0-6 in the MASCAC.

Bridgewater banged out 28 hits in the doubleheader, were issued ten walks and reached on a hit-by-pitch five times. 21 players (four pitchers) got into the games for BSC with 14 players getting at least one hit.  The Bears were also aided by poor Mass. Maritime defense as the Buccaneers committed 14 errors which led to 19 unearned runs.

Junior centerfielder Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) led the on base parade as she went 3-for-3 in the twinbill with two walks and a hit by pitch.  LeBlanc, who reached safely in all six plate appearances, doubled twice, scored five runs and drove in two.

Sophomore rightfielder Meghan Noyes (Stoughton, MA) finished 4-for-6 with five runs scored and three runs batted in.  She walked once, stole a base and was hit by a pitch.  Junior third baseman Stacy Capodiece (East Lyme, CT) went 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, two doubles and two walks.

Junior shortstop Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, MA) was the Bears top run producer as she drove in five runs and also scored three. Sprague went 2-for-5 on the day with two walks and a pair of doubles.

Junior righthander Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) came within three outs of hurling a perfect game in game two of the doubleheader as she allowed just a leadoff bloop single in the fifth inning. Verronneau (9-4) stuck out nine as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

Sophomore lefthander Jillian Vancelette (Charlton City, MA) picked up the win in relief in the opener as she went two innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out one.  Sophomore Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, MA) started and went two plus inning allowing two runs (one earned) while walking three and striking out five. 

BSC hosts conference rival Westfield State on Saturday with game one of the doubleheader getting underway at noon.  Mass. Maritime travels to Newbury College on Friday for a 3:30 doubleheader with the Nighthawks.
