Softball Splits Pair of Games to Open Season

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Bridgewater State College softball team opened the 2008 season by splitting a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Bears (1-1) lost in five innings to Rowan University, 10-0, in the opener, and then rebounded with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Allegheny College.

Junior pitcher Jackie Sasko (Hamilton, NJ) tossed a complete game shutout in the opener to lead Rowan to the 10-0 win.  Sasko (4-0) only allowed two hits and struck out seven batters. She was also two for three at the plate with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

A Ciana Godin (Sr., Worcester, MA) triple and a Stacy Capodiece (Jr., East Lyme, CT) double were the only two hits in the game for the Bears.  Sophomore pitcher Jamie Ducinski (Duxbury, MA) took the loss in the circle as she got the start and pitched into the fourth inning.

Junior center fielder Allie LeBlanc (Somerset, MA) saw her school record 26-game hitting streak come to an end as she went 0-for-2 in the loss.

In the second game of the day, Bridgewater gave Head Coach Lori Salvia her first collegiate coaching victory as the Bears rallied to defeat Allegheny College, 4-2.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Verronneau (Acushnet, MA) went the distance in the circle allowing two runs (1 earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking five.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Bears plated three runs on RBI singles by senior second baseman Nicole Hebert (Taunton, MA) and senior catcher Lindsey Allison (South Easton, MA) and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Melissa McNamara (Stoughton, MA).  BSC plated a big insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by LeBlanc

Hebert went 3-for-4 in the second game with an RBI and a run scored, while LeBlanc went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

BSC takes on Western Connecticut State University at 3 PM tomorrow followed by a 5 o'clock game with Smith College.
