BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior Stephen Wahome has been selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District One Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA).

Wahome, who is making his first appearance on the regional all-academic team, earned first team honors in District One, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

The Lowell, Massachusetts native and Management major is currently sporting a terrific 3.58 GPA.  He has been named to the Dean’s List in each of her first six semesters at Bridgewater and is a nine-time MASCAC All-Academic Team selection.

Wahome qualified for the 2011 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships after placing fourth to earn All-New England honors at the New England Division III Championships. He finished 109th out of 279 runners at the national meet.

During the winter indoor track and field season, Wahome was part of the Bears’ MASCAC Champion 4 x 800-meter relay team which also garnered All-New England honors with a seventh place showing at the New England Division III Championships.

Wahome captured the MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field title in the 5,000-meter run this past spring and finished second in the 10,000-meter run at the ECAC Division III Championships to earn All-ECAC status.  He also ran a leg on the Bears’ 4 x 800-meter relay team which placed eighth at ECACs.

Wahome currently holds BSU individual indoor records in the 3,000-meter run (8:43.42), and the 5,000 (14:54.12).  He has also been a part of three school record-setting relay teams.  The 4 x 800 (7:57.94) and distance medley relay (10:23.71) during the indoor season and the 4 x 800 (7:57.57) during the outdoor.

To be eligible for all-academic honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or a key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

This marks the first year that the College Division (Non-Division I) has been expanded to include Divisions II, III, and the NAIA and Canadian schools and two-year institutions. The regions were also spread out to include eight distinct geographic locations across the United States.
