Men's Track & Field Competes at UMass Boston Beacons Open

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's indoor track & field team won five events at the UMass Boston Beacons Open held on Sunday at The Track at New Balance.

Graduate student Corey Stalters (Norton, Mass.) won the meet title in the shot put with a career-best toss of 50-feet, two inches (15.29m). Stalters is currently ranked 18th in all of Division III in the event.

Junior Stephen Spofford (Chelmsford, Mass.) garnered top honors in the 400-meter dash with a career-best time of 49.83 seconds. Spofford, who also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a PR time of 22.50 seconds, presently ranks 33rd in all of Division III in the 400.

Spofford, graduate student Mason Matias (New Bedford, Mass.), sophomore Drew Roberts (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Nathan Branco (Fairhaven, Mass.) won the 4x400-meter relay as the foursome posted a time of 3:31.35. Matias added a third place showing in the 200-meter dash (22.56).

Senior Thomas Barinelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) captured top honors in the 60-meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.62 seconds and placed second in the high jump with a leap of six feet, 0.75 inches (1.85m).

Sophomore Nicholas Grace (Acushnet, Mass.) and junior Charles Dakai (Millville, Mass.) finished 1-2 in the 500-meter dash. Grace, who was also fourth in the triple jump (38'9.5"/11/82m), won the race with a time of 1:09.85 while Dakai checked in at 1:09.94.

Sophomore Chris Beaulieu (Monson, Mass.) finished second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 4.5 inches (6.21m).

Seniors Jonathan Quigley (Haverhill, Mass.), Nathaniel Parker (Tisbury, Mass.) and Jason Dann (Reading, Mass.) were right behind Stalters in the shot put. Quigley recorded a mark of 43 feet, 6.5 inches (13.27m) to place second while Parker was third checking in at 43 feet, six inches (13.26m) and Dann finished fourth at 43 feet, 2.25 inches (13.16m).

Dann also placed third in the weight throw with a heave of 48 feet, six inches (14.79m) while Parker finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 47 feet, three inches (14.41m).

Senior Michael Young (shrewsbury, Mass.) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.85 seconds to round out the Bears' top four placewinners.

The Bears are off until Saturday, January 13th when they head to the Wheaton Invitational.
