Matthew Lighten Named MASCAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore Matthew Lighten has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Lighten captured the MASCAC title and set a conference meet record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds as he helped the Bears win their third straight MASCAC Indoor Championship this past weekend. The Dalton, Massachusetts product also ran a leg on the Bears’ school record-setting 4x200-meter relay squad which captured the conference crown with a time of 1:28.66. Lighten, classmates Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) and Jadin Bruneau (Taunton, Mass.), and senior Lamont Haynes (Boston, Mass.) broke the previous BSU indoor mark of 1:29.45 set in 2013.

Lighten, who added a second place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.16) at the championship meet, currently ranks first in all of Division III in the 200. He is also 14th in New England in the 60.

The BSU men’s indoor track & field team is back in action on Saturday (Feb. 22) as several members of the squad will compete at the Bowdoin Invitational.
