Gomes Leads Men's Track to 10th Place Finish at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Senior Nilton Gomes took home a first place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of :51.94 as the Bridgewater State College men's indoor track team placed tenth at the Smith College Tartan Invitational on Saturday.

The Bears finished with 32 total points while RPI was the meet winner with 194 points.

Senior sprinter Fernando Vieira finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (:23.79) while junior Jesse Walker placed eighth in the 55-meter dash (:06.93). Freshman Dan Slyne also finished eighth in the 800-meter run (2:05.65).

In relay action the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each garnered a second place finish with times of 1:36.31 and 3:33.37 respectively.

In the field, freshman Sammie Ervin jumped to a ninth place finish (18'9.25") in the long jump while junior Jason Williams tossed the weight throw 43'2.25" to earn a ninth place showing as well. Senior Chris Clark placed 10th (40'10.5") in the shot put while Gomes and freshman Michael Casely finished in ninth (38'0.75") and 10th place (38'0.25") respectively in the triple jump.

Junior Tim Barrow competed in the one-mile run at the Boston University Valentine Invitational and posted a time of 4:19.00 to finish in 91st place.

The Bridgewater State College track and field team returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Southern Maine for the MASCAC Championships.
