Men's Tennis Drops Tough 6-3 Decision to Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team dropped a non-conference match to the University of Saint Joseph Saturday afternoon.

The Bears lost, 6-3, to the Blue Jays, a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex.

The second straight loss drops BSU to 2-3 with the next match at home on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College.

Saint Joseph will travel to New Hampshire Sunday to face Colby-Sawyer at 1 p.m. in a GNAC matchup.

The Bears recorded a pair of singles wins and one in doubles.

No. 1 singles player Robby Cooney (Plymouth, Mass.) improved to 2-1 by defeating Mateus Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), 7-5, 6-3.

Filippo Mucci (Vineyard Haven, Mass.), playing at No. 5 singles, scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tyler Hussey (Rocky Hill, Conn.).

Winning in doubles for BSU was the second flight duo of Cooney and Matthew Krampf (Littleton, Mass.), who downed Jonathan Huot (South Windsor, Conn.) and Hussey, 8-2.

Saint Joseph won four singles matches and two doubles matches. Three of the four singles wins went three sets.

Christian Kaverud (Glastonbury, Conn.) got past Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) at No. 2 singles, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3, and Ryan Boucher (Bedford, N.H.) outlasted Tom Ayson (Plymouth, Mass.) at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

At No. 4 singles, Huout stopped Krampf, 6-1, 6-2, while Brett Hodas (East Berlin, Conn.) edged Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

Silvestre and Kaverud teamed to score an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Beatrice and Ayson while Boucher and Hodas won at No. 3 doubles over Mucci and Hebert in a tie-breakers, 8-7 (7-4).
