Men's Tennis Downs Regis, 5-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team posted a dramatic 5-4 victory over visiting Regis on Saturday afternoon at the Regis Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Pride fall to 4-6.

Regis led 2-1 after doubles play. Senior Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and graduate Student Mitchell Weiner (Plano, T.X.) teamed up for an 8-6 win at the top doubles flight, while junior Lenny Tan (Waltham, Mass.) and graduate student Andrew Bienvenu (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) recorded an 8-3 victory at the second spot.

The Bears' lone doubles point came on a win by default at the third flight.

Bridgewater State knotted the match with a win by default at number six singles before junior Robert Dwyer (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) gave the visitors a 3-2 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set decision at the fifth flight.

Bienvenu and Torres notched straight set wins at the first (6-3, 6-1) and second (6-3, 6-3) flights, respectively, to put Regis back on top, 4-3.

Senior Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.) battled back from a set down to post a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision at number four singles to even the match. Senior Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, N.Y.) completed the comeback as he also rebounded from a set down to record a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph at the third flight to give the Bears the 5-4 win.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Clark University at 3:30 PM at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts. The Pride are off until next Saturday (Apr. 2) when they entertain the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College.
