Men's Tennis Battles Back for 5-4 Win Over Wentworth

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team posted a dramatic 5-4 victory over visiting Wentworth on Wednesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the visiting Leopards fall to 1-4.

Bridgewater State led 2-1 after doubles play. Seniors Jeff Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) and Colin Lamusta (Lynnfield, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 win at the top flight, while juniors Robert Dwyer (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) and Cameron Doherty (Milford, Mass.) recorded an 8-6 victory at number three.

Freshman Pranav Marwaha (Nashua, N.H.) and graduate student Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) picked up the Leopards' lone doubles point with an 8-7 decision at the second flight which was decided with a 7-5 tie-breaker.

In singles play, sophomore Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) and senior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) notched straight set wins at the second (6-1, 6-3) and first (6-3, 6-2) flights, respectively, to put Wentworth on top, 3-2.

Senior Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.) tied the match up at 3-3 for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-3 straight decision at number four, before junior Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) reclaimed the lead for the Leopards with a tough 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 triumph at the fifth flight.

BSU senior Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, N.Y.) battled back from a set down to record a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-1 victory at the third spot to knot the score at 4-4. Doherty then secured the win for the Bears with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 decision at number six.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to Regis College for a noontime match with the Pride, while the Leopards head to Gordon College for an 11:00 AM Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match with the Fighting Scots.
