Men's Tennis Downs Little East Foe Rhode Island College, 8-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Bridgewater State juniors Cody Farrell (Scituate, MA) and Eric Johnson (Kingston, MA) and freshman Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, MA) each won in both singles and doubles action as the Bears tamed Rhode Island College, 8-1, in Little East Conference men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Bears improve to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Little East, while the Anchormen slip to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

RIC junior Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) and freshman Benjamin Proctor (Cumberland, RI) combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to open the day.

That would prove to be the lone victory for the hosts as Johnson and freshman Hung Huynh (Worcester, MA) scored an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and McGannon and Farrell paired for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.

BSU sophomore Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, MA) had to work hard to defeat Werchadlo at No. 1 singles, but prevailed in straight sets, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-3). The Bears took the remaining singles matches, all in straight sets. Freshman Matt McLeod (Leicester, MA) won at No. 2 (6-2, 6-1) Farrell at No. 3 (6-4, 6-3), Johnson at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and McGannon closed it out at sixth singles (6-1, 6-1).

Both teams are back in action on Monday afternoon.  Rhode Island College travels to Clark University on for a four o'clock game with the Cougars, while Bridgewater State entertains Lesley University also at four.
