Men's Tennis Opens Little East Play with 6-3 Win at Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season following its 6-3 victory over Western Connecticut State University at Westside Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The match marked the Little East Conference opener for both teams.

Bridgewater took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play as the Bears' doubles tandems of Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) and Hung Huynh (Worcester, Mass.), and Matt McLeod (Leicester, MA) and Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, MA), earned wins at the second and third flights, respectively.

Brian Bucknam (Woodbury, CT) and Ryan Klem (Newport, RI) picked up Western's lone doubles point with an 8-5 decision at the top spot.

Both Bucknam and Klem registered the Colonials other two wins.  Bucknam won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, at top singles while Klem posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the fourth flight.

Bridgewater cruised in all the other singles' matches, capturing second, third and sixth solos by identical scores of 6-0, 6-0.  McLeod picked up the win at second singles, Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) at number three and Johnson at the sixth flight. Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' singles winners with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number five.

The Colonials (0-2) take to the road for their next three matches beginning Thursday (Apr. 4) when they meet Bard College.  First serve is slated for 6 pm.  The Bears travel to Gordon College on Tuesday (Apr. 2) for a 3:30 match with the Fighting Scots.
