Men's Tennis Opens 2013 Campaign with 8-1 Win over Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team opened the 2013 season with an 8-1 victory over host Anna Maria College on Saturday evening at the Paxton Sports Centre.

The Bears (1-0) swept all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles flights to come away with the non-conference win.

Junior Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman Hung Huynh (Worcester, Mass.) posted an 8-0 decision at second doubles, while the Bears' third flight tandem of sophomore Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) and junior Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) also earned an 8-0 triumph. Sophomore Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at the top spot.

Freshman Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, Mass.) staked the Bears to a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 straight set win at fifth singles, and Gotlib secured the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set triumph at number two.

Bleau, Farrell and Johnson rounded out the Bears' singles winners as they each won in straight sets at the second, third and sixth flights, respectively.

Anna Maria's lone point of the match came at first singles as freshman Dillon George (Holden, Mass.) won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.

In upcoming action, the Bears host the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University on Monday afternoon at 3:30.  The AMCATS (0-1) travel to Wentworth on Wednesday afternoon for a four o'clock match with the Leopards.
