Barry Gorman Captures Little East Second Flight Singles Title

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College senior co-captain Barry Gorman (Hopedale, MA) capped off an impressive 2008 season by capturing the second flight singles title at the Little East Conference Men's Tennis Tournament this afternoon in Bridgewater.

The top seed in the second flight bracket, Gorman defeated Paul Braude of UMass Boston in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-4.  He then defeated second seeded Derek Stevenson of Southern Maine in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to win the tournmanet.

Gorman completed the 2008 season with an impressive 14-0 mark in singles play.  He and junior teammate Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, MA) lost in the championship match of the second flight doubles bracket on Friday afternoon.

Barbo advanced to the finals at fifth flight singles but dropped a tought three set match to Alex Eisath of Salem State, 2-6, 6-2, 2-6.

Junior co-captain Matt Charest (Somerset, MA) and senior Giovanni Cuscina (Mansfield, MA) both lost in the semifinals of their respective flights.  Charest, the defending top flight Little East singles champion, dropped a three set decision (6-4, 4-6, 4-6) to top seed Jovan Jordan-Whitter of UMass Boston.  Cuscina lost to Steve Lent of Southern Maine at the third flight, 3-6, 7-5, 1-6. 

Salem State won the team title at the tournament with a score of 15.0 points.  Southern Maine finished second (13.0) followed by UMass Boston (12.0) and host Bridgewater (10.0).
