BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College men's tennis team sits in fourth place (6.0 points) after the first day of the 2008 Little East Conference Men's Tennis Championship.
The doubles portion of the tournament was completed on day one with senior co-captain Barry Gorman () and senior Brendon Barbo giving BSC their best finish among the three doubles flights.
Seeded number two in the second flight bracket, Gorman and Barbo advanced to the championship match but dropped a straight set decision to Salem State's team of Rob Thomas and Kyle Watson.
Quarterfinal action in singles play was completed today. The semifinals and championship matches for the six flights will take place on Saturday.
Junior co-captain Matt Charest (Somerset, MA), the fifth seed in the top flight singles bracket, knocked off number four seed Adrien Malosse of Salem State, 8-6, in his quarterfinal match. Charest will take on top seeded Jovan Jordan-Whitter of UMass Boston in the tournament semifinals.
Gorman, who is undefeated in singles play this season at 11-0, earned a first round bye as the top seed in the second flight. He will match up against fourth seeded Paul Braude of UMass Boston tomorrow in the semifinals.
Senior Giovanni Cuscina (Mansfield, MA) defeated Matthias Busch of UMass Boston, 8-6, in his opening match. Cuscina, the second seed in the third flight, will go head-to-head in the tournament semifinals with number three seed Steve Lent of Southern Maine.
In the fifth flight, Barbo easily disposed of UMass Boston's Amit Jumar, as he came away with an 8-1 victory. Seeded second in the bracket, Barbo will take on third seeded Dave Haggerty of RIC in the tournament semifinals.
UMass Boston leads all team's after the first day of action with 9.0 points. The Beacons are followed by Southern Maine (7.0 points), UMass Dartmouth (6.5), Bridgewater (6.0), RIC (5.0), Salem (5.0) and Western Connecticut State (3.0).
