DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team closed out its regular-season road schedule with a thrilling non-conference win on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears scored three second-half goals in less than eight minutes, then added a late game-winning goal by senior Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass.) to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-3, at Cressy Field.
Borden scored the game-winning goal with 6:51 remaining, capping BSU's four-goal explosion in the second half, and he also had an assist.
Junior Gavin Norton (Rockland, Mass.) had a hand in all four goals for BSU (8-4-2), which has won three games in a row. Norton scored twice and added a pair of assists.
Senior Nicolas Matias (Framingham, Mass.) also scored for the Bears.
BSU improved to 5-1-1 on the road. The Corsairs are 2-10-3 with four straight losses.
The Bears have a 27-12-6 lead in the series, which began in 1979.
UMass Dartmouth held a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal at 21:38 by sophomore Matt Kobrenski (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Kobrenski's corner kick attempt somehow found its way inside the near post for his first goal of the season.
BSU tied it at 51:29 when Norton converted a centering pass by senior Dominek Borden (New Bedford, Mass.). Borden's cross evaded the diving UMD netminder and Norton buried a shot into the wide open center of the cage.
The Corsairs came right back to retake the lead at 57:19 with senior Justin Petrillo (Marshfield, Mass.) scoring into the lower left part of the cage off a nice feed from sophomore Mario Rodriguez (Rehoboth, Mass.). Petrillo has three goals this season.
Just 29 seconds later, Norton tied the game at 2-2 when he buried a left-footed shot inside the left post from 15 yards out with sophomore Tyler Chang (Acushnet, Mass.) collecting the assist.
BSU opened its first lead of the day 1:04 later when Matias scored his third goal of the season at 58:52 for a 3-2 lead. Norton beat a defender on the right side of the 18, dribbled along the goal line and slipped a centering to an unguarded Matias at the front of the net.
Norton now leads the Bears in scoring with 12 points and is tied for first with four goals.
UMass Dartmouth, which had a goal called back in the 64th minute, evened the game at 3-3 at with just 8:33 left to play as fifth-year senior Joey Paiva (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored his team-best seventh goal from Petrillo.
But Borden gave BSU the victory with his second goal of the season at 83:09, as he headed home a corner kick attempt sent into the six by Norton.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matheus Rodrigues (Edgartown, Mass.), making his fourth start of the season, recorded the win. He made two saves for the Bears.
Corsairs sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Porter (Rockland, Mass.) had 10 saves.
BSU plays its final three games of the regular season at Mazzaferro Field. The Bears hosts Westfield State at noon on Saturday.
BSU (5-0) has already captured the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title with Westfield State (2-1-2) currently alone in second place.
