Nelson, Russell Selected to Play in NEISL Senior All-Star Game

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior forward David Nelson and graduate goalkeeper William Russell have been selected to play in the 2023 New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Division III Senior All-Star Game sponsored by GoPlay.

The 2023 NEISL Division III Senior All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, November 26th at Brandeis University. The match is slated to get underway at one o'clock.

Nelson and Russell are the tenth and eleventh Bears selected to play in the NEISL Senior All-Star Game since 2008. They join former teammates Robson Montron (2022), Liam Lenihan (2021) and Kevin Roberts (2021) as well as BSU men's soccer standouts Conor Murtagh (2015), Tucker Fairbanks (2012), Donald Flores (2011), Dan Roberts (2011), Mike White (2010) and Jon Machado (2008).

Nelson recorded 11 goals and six assists for 28 points in 19 games this season. The East Bridgewater, Massachusetts product led the MASCAC in scoring in 2023 and tied for second in goals. Nelson was also third among the conference leaders in game-winning goals and tied for third in assists.

In 75 games over four seasons at Bridgewater State, Nelson amassed 30 goals and 16 assists for 76 points. Eight of his 30 goals were game-winners. The two-time All-MASCAC selection ranks second among the Bears' all-time leaders in scoring, third in goals and tied for third in games played.

In 19 games this season, Russell posted a 12-3-4 record with seven shutouts and a 0.95 goals against average in 1,700-plus minutes (1700:26) of work. The 2023 All-MASCAC First Team selection turned aside 112 shots and recorded an .862 save percentage.

Russell, who calls Sandwich, Massachusetts home, led the MASCAC in minutes played, wins and saves in 2023. He was also second among the conference leaders in shutouts, save percentage and goals against average.

On a national level, Russell is currently tied for ninth in all of Division III in saves and ranks 14th in save percentage. He is also 39th in minutes played and tied for 40th in shutouts.

In 49 games over four seasons at Bridgewater State, Russell posted a 25-15-8 record with 14 1/2 shutouts, a 1.17 goals against average, 291 saves and an .839 save percentage in just under 4,314 minutes (4313:53) of work. He is second among the Bears' all-time goaltending leaders in goals against average and is fifth in both wins and shutouts.
