BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team wrapped up regular season play with a 3-0 shutout victory over MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 6-8-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the MASCAC, while the Trailblazers fall to 5-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.

Junior forward David Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) buried a shot inside the right post from 16 yards out off a give-and-go with senior forward Robson Montrond (Brockton, Mass.) to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. The goal marked Nelson's team-leading seventh of the season.

Sophomore forward Brett Ghelfi (Halifax, Mass.) potted his third goal of the 2022 campaign to extend the BSU lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute. Freshman midfielder Gavin Norton (Rockland, Mass.) made a long run down the left side and centered a pass to Ghelfi who cut back to the outside and fired a shot from the top of the 18 into the right side of the cage.

Montrond headed home the rebound of a Nelson shot in the 59th minute to make it a 3-0 game. For Montrond, the goal marked his fifth of the season and 17th of his career.

Bridgewater State finished with a 19-2 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-0 edge in corner kick attempts.

BSU senior goalkeeper William Russell (Sandwich, Mass.) was forced to make just one save as he record his sixth win of the season and fourth shutout.

Senior netminder Sam Edge (Williamstown, Mass.) played the first 81 minutes between the pipes of the Trailblazers and turned aside eight shots.

Both teams will compete in the first round of the  MASCAC Tournament next Tuesday. The Bears are seeded fourth and will host #5 Westfield State University on Tuesday night at seven. MCLA is the #6 seed and will travel to third-seeded Worcester State University on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Lancers at one.
