Smith, Bagley Lead Men's Soccer to 1-0 Shutout of Mass. Maritime

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Adam Smith (Kingston, Mass.) notched the game's only goal in the 66th minute to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday evening at Swenson Field.

Bridgewater improves to 5-7-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the MASCAC, while Mass. Maritime falls to 6-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

Junior keeper Matt Bagley (Braintree, Mass.) made six saves to post his third shutout of the season in goal for the Bears.

Senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) turned aside five shots in a solid effort between the pipes for the visiting Buccaneers.  Young made a sensational stop on first half penalty kick attempt off the foot of BSU senior forward Simao Mendes (Brockton, Mass.) to keep the game scoreless at the time.

Mendes would provide the assist on the game-winner as he slid a short pass to Smith who beat a Buccaneer defender and slipped a shot past the outstretched hand of Young and just inside the far post.

The Bears held a slight 16-14 edge in shots, while corner kicks were even at three apiece.

The win marked the 98th career coaching victory for BSU head coach, Brendan Adams.  Adams has guided the Bears to a record of 98-79-20 (.548) in his 11 seasons at the helm.

Both teams are back in action next Wednesday.  Bridgewater hosts Wheaton College at 3:30, while Mass. Maritime travels to WPI for a seven o'clock game with the Engineers.
