BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the third time this season, Bridgewater State University junior goalkeeper Brianna Gagnon has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
A native of Tewksbury, Massachusettts Gagnon went 3-0 between the pipes for the Bears last week with 18 saves, and an .857 save percentage to go along with a 1.00 goals against average.
Gagnon made eight saves in a 2-1 MASCAC win at Salem State University, and turned aside five shots in a key 4-1 victory over defending MASCAC champion Worcester State University. She also stopped five shots in a 3-1 non-conference road triumph against UMass Dartmouth.
In 12 games this season, all starts, Gagnon is 5-7 with a shutout. She has also recorded 81 saves and posted a .730 save percentage as well as a 2.64 goal against average in 681-plus (681:47) minutes of action.
Gagnon, who also earned MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 23rd and 30th, is presently tied for third in the conference in wins and tied for fourth in shutouts. She also ranks fourth among the MASCAC goaltending leaders in games played, starts and minutes played, as well as fifth in both saves and goals against average.
Gagnon made the transition to goaltender in 2024 after competing her first two seasons as a field player. In 25 games at forward in 2022 and 2023, Gagnon tallied six goals and an assist for 13 points.
Winners of three straight games, the BSU field hockey team is currently 6-7 on the season and 3-4 in the MASCAC standings. The Bears entertain Nichols College on Friday night at seven o'clock and will also hold Senior Night festivities.
