Four Bears Named NFHCA Scholars of Distinction

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior Alexis Giesta, junior Abby Massarelli and sophomores Irianny Solorin and Emelia Westwater have each been named 2023 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Scholars of Distinction.

Giesta, Massarelli, Solorin and Westwater are among over 509 Division III student-athletes from across the country to earn the honor, including 15 from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

The NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year.

A native of Fall River, Massachusetts, Giesta is a psychology major with an outstanding 3.945 grade point average. She also has a minor in management.

Massarelli, who hails from Stoughton, Massachusetts, is currently sporting an impressive 3.935 GPA as she is majoring in elementary education.

Solorin, a Methuen, Massachusetts resident, is a biology major with a remarkable 3.915 GPA. She also has a minor in theatre arts.

An Attleboro, Massachusetts product, Westwater checks in with a perfect 4.0 GPA and is majoring in elementary education.

Earlier this month, Giesta, Massarelli, Solorin and Westwater were among 13 Bears named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.
