Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Decision to Framingham State in MASCAC Quarterfinals

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Third-seeded Framingham State University rallied for a 3-2 win over #6 seed Bridgewater State University in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday night at Maple Street Field.

The Rams (10-9) advance to the MASCAC Tournament semifinals and will travel to Westfield State University on Friday to take on the second-seeded Owls at 3:30. The Bears end the season with an overall record of 4-12-1.

Framingham scored three times off penalty corners as the Rams erased a 2-1 second-half deficit.

BSU freshman forward Madison Ellis (Attleboro, Mass.) staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead 3:43 into the second quarter with her fifth goal of the season. Sophomore forward Lexi James (Ipswich, Mass.) sent a backhanded crossing pass towards the front of the net and Ellis batted the ball out of midair and into the back of the cage.

The Bears appeared to take a 2-0 lead with 9:31 remaining in the second period, but the goal was taken off the board after a conversation between the officials.

The Rams converted off a penalty corner less than two minutes into the third period to knot the score at 1-1 as junior forward Kaylee Beck (Tyngsboro, Mass.) buried a shot into the right side of the net with senior midfielder Angelina Serra (North Chelmsford, Mass.) picking up the assist. For Beck, the goal marked her eighth of the 2023 campaign.

The Bears reclaimed the lead with just 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a goal by graduate forward Jordyn Perry (Nantucket, Mass.). Senior forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) set up the scoring strike with a pass to the front of the net. Perry collected the ball, turned, and slipped a shot inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

Framingham answered with no time left on the third quarter scoreboard as the Rams converted again off a penalty corner. Off a scramble in front of the net and with the goalie down, freshman midfielder Allie Harmuth (Reading, Mass.) buried a shot into the left side of the cage for her first collegiate goal.

The Rams notched their third penalty corner goal of the night to take a 3-2 lead with 10:35 left to play in the fourth quarter. Graduate midfielder Isabelle Kondi (Canaan, N.H.) stickhandled in and slipped a shot under the pads of the BSU keeper. Serra, who took the penalty corner, assisted on Kondi's seventh marker of the campaign.

The Bears, who finished with just six shots on the evening, did not attempt a shot over the final 12 minutes of the contest.

Framingham held a 17-6 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-3 edge in penalty corner attempts. Five of the Rams' six corners came in the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Tello (Nashua, N.H.) made three saves to pick up her tenth win of the season for the Rams. Freshman goalkeeper Kailey Hutchinson (Fall River, Mass.) turned aside nine shots between the pipes for the Bears.
